Facebook Marketplace in Cameroon: A Few Tips Before You Buy or Sell

Simple tips for buying and selling on Facebook Marketplace in Cameroon, especially in Douala.

Facebook Marketplace has made buying and selling easier for many people in Cameroon. You can find phones, furniture, clothes, cars, electronics, and small business items without moving around town the whole day.

But it is still Cameroon. Sense must be involved.

Marketplace is useful, but it is not magic. Facebook only gives people a place to meet. You are still the one who must check the seller, inspect the item, agree on price, and protect yourself.

If you are buying in Douala, do not rush because one seller sounds cheap. Talk to different sellers. Compare prices. Ask for clear pictures. Ask where the item is coming from. If the person avoids basic questions, leave it.

For delivery, choose a public place. A fuel station, supermarket entrance, santa lucia, busy junction, or any open place where people are around. Avoid going to someone’s house alone, especially for expensive items. We have heard enough stories of people getting robbed/raped because they trusted too fast.

If you are buying electronics, test before paying. Check the phone, charger, battery, screen, camera, receipt if available, and network status. For furniture or bigger items, go with someone if possible. Do not send payment before seeing the item unless you truly trust the person (don't ever).

If you are selling, also protect yourself. Meet buyers in public places too. Do not carry expensive items to quiet corners. If someone is rushing you, changing location too much, or asking strange questions, take it as a warning.

One small thing many people forget: if you do not want your Facebook friends to see what you are selling, look for the option to hide the listing from friends before posting. Sometimes you just want to sell quietly without your whole timeline knowing your business.

Facebook Marketplace can help, especially when money is tight and people want cheaper options. But cheap should not make us careless. Ask questions. Compare. Meet in public. Test before paying. And if something feels off, leave it.

Better to miss one deal than enter shock because of one 'good price'.
